CAMP HI-SIERRA is the privately owned property of Santa Clara County Council, Boy Scouts of America, and is located at an elevation of 5000 ft. within the Stanislaus National Forest. The history of the property is a rich heritage of Miwok Indian summer dwellings, early homesteads, and the Cold Springs sawmill site for the Standard Lumber Company.

The Council purchased the camp's one hundred acres in1949 for $10.00 an acre. The first regular camping season was 1951, and from that summer to the present. Today, Scouts can enjoy the many wonders of wildlife, wildflowers, lofty mountain peaks, and beautiful forests. This is why Camp Hi-Sierra is a rich setting for your Scouts to have a real Scouting experience.

Troop 179 photo session kicks off a weeklong Hi-Sierra summer camp that runs Sunday July 15 through Saturday 21, 2007. Scouts can earn "Merit Badges" and sign-off for "Trail to First Class", participate in Skills of the Day at each "Program Area", advance within the tribe of Hi-Sierra, participate in high-adventure program such as "Mountain Adventure" and "Base Camp" (for more experienced campers), and of course to have a lot of fun.

The general store where scouts can buy ice cream, soda, candy and snacks ($0.25-$1.00/each item), merit badge books ($4.00/each), CHS Classic Watch ($20.00), Henley T-Shirt ($20.00), CHS Ceramic Camper or Leader Mug ($5.00/each), unlimited Rifle Range Shooting Pass ($12.00 only for merit badge participants), unlimited Shotgun Shooting Pass ($15.00 only for merit badge participants), and lot of miscellanous scout related items (prices vary).

"Handicraft Program Area" - leatherworking, basketry, and pottery

"The Nature Center Program Area" - all things involving nature

"Scoutcraft Program Area" - knots, orienteering, camping skills, cooking, etc.

" The Waterfront Program Area (Aquatics)" - swimming, canoeing, rowing, etc. The North Fork of the Tuolumne River flows through the camp and provides this waterfront lake of endless enjoyment.

" Foxfire program area" - metalworking, Indian Lore, Mountain Man, etc.

After orientation camp tour and other medical checkup procedures, scouts get ready to move to their campsite

All participating troops gather with summer camp staff (Venturing leaders in green shirts) for flag ceremony at the end of the first day and get ready for first dinner of the week.

Scouts must drink a lot of water, a lot of water, and a lot of water during the summer camp, and obviously they did very well on the first day. Look at their pitchers and glasses on the table. Good job, big guys!

Here, scouts are eating with a Scoutmaster that serves as the chaplain of the Hi-Sierra summer camp.
Pleasant faces with completely clean dishes. After the dinner, the photographer asked a participating adult camper as scout parent (in grey shirt, father of Nhu-Hao) if he enjoyed his meal and had any comment. "A little better than my wife's (chị Mười) cooking!" he replied with a big smile to his ears, then whispering, "I only say this to you at this time and at this place, but her dish "Cháo Lòng" (Vietnamese beef porridge) still stays number ONE, unbeatable".

Happy faces! They must be well fed and happy with first delicious meal of their week long summer camp.

"Dinning Hall" - Scouts need to take their hats off at entering the hall, except the staff to show the respect.

What a great time to have dinner with fellow scouts from other troop that makes us thinking scouting is indeed a global brotherhood. What a feeling!

If you're lost, there are several ways to get back on the track even though you have no compass.

AT DAYTIME
Standard trees often lean towards the East because of the west wind.
Treetops are usually most developed towards the South.
Trees and stones have moss on the shady side, often the North side.
Anthills are normally found to the South of the tree trunk.
At noon the sun is due South.
At 6 AM the sun is due East.
At 6 PM. the sun is due West.

YOUR WATCH
You can use your watch as a compass. Hold your watch horizontally. The hour hand has to point towards the sun. With a straw or something else you half the angle between the hour hand and 12 o’clock. The straw now points South – North. Knowing this you shouldn’t get lost. Try them out!

Today is the anniversary of the founding father of Vietnam, Hung Vuong. He was said to be the oldest child of 100 children of the Dragon and the Fairy, which is related to our Boy Scout troop name, Bach Viet, and the Hung Vuong Martial Arts Group.

Anniversary of Hung Vuong, the founding father of Van Lang (Vietnam)

Our troop BSA 179 has Vietnamese name Lien Doan Bach Viet (100 Vietnamese children of Au-co and Lac-Long-Quan) will help to celebrate the anniversary of Hung Vuong this Sunday April 29, 2007 at Andrew Hill High School in San Jose, California. As members of a Boy Scout Troop that bears the name of our ancestor's root, we would like remind ourselves and share with others with a summary of this historical and legendary mark of Vietnam history.

Hùng Vuong was the first emperor of Văn Lang or Lac Viet (as Vietnam was known at the time). Legend tells of the dragon lord, Lac Long Quân and the mountain fairy, Âu Co who had 100 children, of whom Hùng Vuong was the eldest. The parents belonged to different environments, so they had to split up and take half of the sons to each homeland. Hùng Vuong went to live by the coast near the sea, the domain of dragons.

According to legend, he came to power in 2880 BC, ruling an area covering what is now Vietnam and part of China. He founded the Hong Bàng Dynasty, which ruled Vietnam until 258 BC. His dynasty existed in Vietnamese prehistory, but much of the lore from this time is now lost to the ages. His sons were always named after him and many stories include either him or another of his offspring. Stories tell of the heroics of eighteen different Hùng Vuongs (one explains the creation of the watermelon with the help of Hùng Vuong the tenth) but fail to account for the numerous unknown rulers of Vietnam during their two millennia of sovereignty.

The Hong Bàng Dynasty was overthrown by An Duong Vuong from the upland kingdom of Thuc, but his regime fell to the Chinese, thus beginning millennia of Chinese domination.
It is likely that the name Hùng Vuong is a combination of the two Vietnamese words Hùng, which means "brave" and Vuong, which means "king". The name Hùng Vuong might have been a title bestowed on a chieftain. The Hùng Vuong would have been the head chieftain of Văn Lang which at the time was composed of feudal communities of rice farmers (similar to the way the Holy Roman Emperor was elected to rule by fellow German princes.)

The public holiday in Vietnam to celebrate the Hung kings is on the 10th day of the 3rd lunar month which this year, 2007, is 26 April.

HOW TO LEARN MORSE CODE IN 15 MINUTES

We had a challenge to learn the Morse code within an hour from our Dad. He gave us a hint to use a method called mnemonic code where we used acronyms to help us more easily memorizing the tree. We can reconstruct the chart easily with out memorizing the whole thing.

The phrase we came up with is: “Eating IS Healthy 4 5-year olds.” This is a phrase that helped us to memorize the most outer branch of “DIT”. Anyone can create his/her own phrases if it helps you the Morse code learning easier and with fun. It took us about two hours to memorize the all alphabets by picturing the tree in our minds to translate a letter. We made up catchy phrases to help us to memorize the most basic letters such as T or E.

We then learned the inner parts of the Morse Code Tree where it branches off. By doing this, we quickly memorized the tree to help us translate any letter in the alphabet. Each time we practiced memorizing the Morse code, it required less and less effort. The easiest and quickly way to learn Morse code is a combination of using the mnemonic code and memorizing the whole tree.

We learned and memorize within 1 hour, and thought it would be cool to share it to all my crew members.

Place your pencil where it says START and listen to morse code.
Move down and to the right every time you hear a DIT (a dot).
Move down and to the left every time you hear a DAH (a dash).
Here's an example: You hear DAH DIT DIT which is a dash then dot then dot.
You start at START and hear a DAH then move down and left to the T and then you hear a DIT so you move down and RIGHT to the N and then you hear another DIT so you move DOWN and RIGHT again and land on the D
You then write down the letter D on your code copy paper and jump back to START waiting for your next letter.
The key to learning the code is hearing it and comprehending it while you hear it.

Who is Trần Quốc Tuấn?

Our BSA crew 179 has the honor to bear the name of the most venerated Vietnamese legendary hero, and a brilliant military strategist who defeated two Mongol invasions and became a cultural heroic icon among modern Vietnamese history.

Trần Quốc Tuấn was original name of a patriotic teenager that later became Hưng Đạo Vương, He was born in Nam Định in 1229 and died in 1300, Van Kiếp, Vietnam. He was King Trần Thái Tôn's nephew. Talented, energetic and very intelligent, Trần Quốc Tuấn was appointed commander-in-chief of the Đại Việt armed forces in 1283.

By the early 1280s the Vietnamese kingdom faced a growing threat from the Mongols under Kublai Khan, who had conquered China in the previous decade. The primary challenge to Vietnamese independence, however, came from the north. The Yuan (Mongol) dynasty, which had come to power in China in 1279, sent armies estimated at more than 300,000 soldiers to restore the Red River delta to Chinese rule. General Trần Hưng Đạo resisted stubbornly and eventually were able to drive out the invaders.

Methods and Ideals of Venturing

The Methods of Venturing are:

Leadership All Venturers are given opportunities to learn and apply proven leadership skills. A Venturing Crew is led by elected crew officers. The

Venturing Leadership Skills Course is designed for all Venturers and helps teach them in an active way to lead effectively.

Group Activities Venturing activities are interdependent group experiences in which success is dependent on the cooperation of all. Learning by "doing" in a group setting provides opportunities for developing new skills.

Adult Association The youth officers lead the crew. The officers and activity chairs work closely with adult Advisors and other adult leaders in a spirit of partnership. The adults serve in a "shadow" leader capacity.

Recognition Recognition comes through the Venturing advancement program and through the acknowledgement of a youth's competence and ability by peers and adults.

The Ideals Venturers are expected to know and live by the Venturing Oath and Code. They promise to be faithful in religious duties, treasure their American heritage, help others, and seek truth and fairness.

High Adventure Venturing's emphasis on high adventure helps provide team-building opportunities, new meaningful experiences, practical leadership application, and lifelong memories to young adults.

Teaching Others All of the Venturing awards require Venturers to teach what they have learned to others. When they teach others often, Venturers are better able to retain the skill or knowledge taught, they gain confidence in their ability to speak and relate to others, and they acquire skills that can benefit them for the rest of their lives as a hobby or occupation.

The Ideals of Venturing are expressed in the Venturing Oath and Code:

Venturing is a division of the Boy Scouts of America for young men and women ages 14 through 21. Its purpose is to provide positive experiences to help youth mature and to prepare them to become responsible adults. It is based on a unique and dynamic relationship between youth, adult leaders, and organizations in their communities. Sea Scouts are the nautical oriented part of this division. As of the end of 2004, the Venturing program was serving 280,584 Venturers with 65,504 crew level leaders in 21,135 crews.

On my honor: You are stating your promise backed by your own personal worth.

I will do my best: Only you know what your best truly is. Do not measure yourself against the accomplishments or laziness of peers - strive to surpass your own high standards and be proud when you know you've put in your best effort.
To do my duty to God: Your duty to God is to follow the teachings of your religious leaders always.
and my country: Every citizen has responsibilities to understand, defend, and improve his community. Duties include serving in public office, voting, protecting natural resources, and learning about our government system.
and to obey the Scout Law; You are promising to follow these twelve points, not only in scouting, but in all areas of your life. You will use the Law as a compass to guide your decisions and actions.
To help other people at all times; You will look for opportunities to help and will not pass someone by that you are capable of aiding. You will use your skills to assist anyone you meet and seek additional help if needed.
To keep myself physically strong, You will nurture and protect your body, eating healthy food, exercising, getting rest, and avoiding harmful habits like drugs, tobacco, and alcohol. Maintaining your physical strength is required to do your best and fulfill the other points of this promise.
mentally awake, You will exercise your mind by doing your best in school. You will explore your world and try to continually learn and then share your knowledge with others.
and morally straight.
You will maintain honest and open relationships with others. You will hold yourself to a high moral standard and be clean in your speech and actions while being faithful to your religious beliefs.

The Boy Scout Oath has three main clauses which are good to remember and may help you understand that the oath is meant to cover all parts of your life:

DUTY TO GOD AND COUNTRY: The core of your being is your relationship with God. Your family and religious leaders teach you about knowing and serving God and you do your duty by following their teachings and being a good family member. Your duty to your country is being a good citizen, obeying the laws, working to make it a stronger nation, and defending it and its principals.

DUTY TO OTHER PEOPLE: Doing your Good Turn each day, looking for people that could use a hand, and providing aid for community services are all ways to help others. We are obligated to help those that can not help themselves and helping with a cheerful spirit builds our own character.

DUTY TO SELF: Caring for yourself physically, mentally, and morally will result in a more rewarding life. Only you can control how you respond to challenges, hardships, and pleasures - and being strong in body, mind, and spirit will aid you in handling anything that comes your way.
